A: Hello Jenny,

                                                                Judy

To Judy:

            Jenny

(I am so happy you wrote me.  I hope I can help you get some good rest.

If you would like to see a good change, you will need to do the following, and to persevere in doing it consistently:

1)  The best and first thing you can do now, is to put your baby in her own bedroom.  It is best for her to learn to sleep in her own room from now on.  This will definitely help her to stop playing during the night.

2)  During the day time, what is your current schedule?  Begin setting a good schedule of feeding once every four hours.  After feeding, remember to keep her awake after feeding, play with her and make her tired, and then put her to nap.  Remember the feed-play-sleep cycle during the day.

3)  My friend has a four month old baby whom they have trained using the Dr. Denmark method.  Their baby slept through the night after 6 days of training.  Their baby sleeps 12 hours straight at night now.  They tell me that if your baby weighs around 6 kg, the doctors recommend feeding about approximately 10% of the baby's body weight each day.  So if the baby is about 6.3kg, the doctors recommend feeding about 540-720cc a day.  But Dr. Denmark would say some babies eat less and that it's OK.  The important thing to look for is consistent weight gain, about 100g a week.  If your baby is gaining weight consistently and healthy, then you don't need to worry too much.

4)  Next, in addition to formula, begin feeding baby food, three times a day.  Your baby is old enough.  Baby food will help her to become more full, too.  Eating baby food may also help her to sleep better and longer.  Start with rice cereal mixed with some formula.  After she gets used to swallowing the rice cereal, begin adding pureed fruit, and after a while, begin adding some protein.  Check the feeding chapter in my book.

5)  Once you have begun a good daytime schedule of feeding once every four hours, next pick one of the three methods in my book for training the baby to sleep through the night.  No matter which method you choose, do NOT get up in the middle of the night more than once.  For example, if your last feeding is 10:00PM, feed her only ONCE about 2-3 PM.  Do NOT feed her anymore until the morning feeding of 6AM.

6)  If you stick to your schedule, your baby will stop 'snacking'.  She will begin taking 'full meals.'  If you stick to your schedule, she will learn to eat until she is full.  Right now, your baby is used to 'snacking' through the day.  That's why she only drinks a few cc of milk and why she drinks so often.

7)  It will be very normal for your baby to scream and cry as you try to adjust her to the new schedule.  She has already formed the habit of getting attention everytime she cries.  If you really want to change the overall habit, and to bring overall peace and rest to your family and yourself, you will need to be CONSISTENT.  For the next two weeks, try hard to follow the schedule.  If she cries in the middle of the night, feed her only the one time you have decided to.  Then ignore her!  Don't give her water or pacifier.  Just let her learn to comfort herself.  After two weeks, if you are consistent, you will see a good change.

8)  As for 趴睡, I think your baby may just have weak muscles because she has been sleeping on her back.  When you play with her, begin putting her on her stomach.  Let her practice crawling and lifting up her neck.  Since she's already four months old, it's not so important to have her 趴睡 anymore.  It's your decision.

Write me anytime if you have any more questions.  Let me know how things progress.

Judy)
